FAGE is a Greek yogurt making company which began operations in 1926. In 2000 FAGE began exporting its yogurt to the USA. Due to increased demand, the company decided to build a plant in the U.S., which would allow it to increase distribution in the U.S. and extend the shelf-life of the products by eliminating time to export the products from Greece. In February 2005, FAGE USA Dairy, Inc. was created as a U.S. yogurt manufacturing company.
Due to the large quantities of milk used in making yogurt, FAGE’s U.S. plant required close proximity to dairy farms. The company considered locations in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut. The waste from yogurt manufacturing also required a sewage treatment facility that could handle large quantities of whey.
The Fulton County EDC assisted FAGE with its site search, and FAGE selected a 21 acre site in the Johnstown Industrial Park for the yogurt facility. To date, FAGE has invested over $100 million of its own money in a 100,000 square foot yogurt manufacturing plant, and created 100 new jobs. FAGE USA Dairy, Inc. is an Empire Zone certified business. Fulton County EDC is currently assisting the company with a $26 million expansion which will double the size of the state of the art refrigerated warehouse and includes the installation of new storage tanks, milk separators, filling & palletizing lines and an additional cooling tunnel.
