Pathmark Stores is a supermarket chain with stores New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. The company was interested in lowering its energy consumption at seven of their New York stores.
High energy prices raise operating costs for New York's businesses. The average Pathmark store is more than 52,000 square feet, and like most 24/7 stores, these facilities consume a large amount of electric power. Most of this energy is used by refrigeration, lighting, and HVAC systems.
Pathmark Stores used NYSERDAincentives to receive over $100,000 for recommended energy- efficiency improvements. Working with NYSERDA, its consultants, and other energy specialists several energy efficiency improvements were recommended. These improvements included lighting efficiency, high-efficiency refrigeration systems, VFDs, demand response, on-site photovoltaic and co-generation systems. These improvements save Pathmark Stores $200,000 annually. Applications for projects similar to this can be made through NYSERDA's Existing Facility Program.
